Why are the Children called Children of the Sandstorm?
Because another name for the Black Plague was Sandstorm – like sand, it got everywhere and it was very difficult to get rid of it completely. And, of course, at the time of writing Children, I was listening to Children of the Sandstorm . So, yeah. There you are.

Why are there so few places [in the boards] that are actually in New York?
Because I’ve never been to New York. Ever. I intend to go sometime, but next stop is Japan. All I have to go on are comics and the odd book. Don’t underestimate the power of an online world atlas / map, either. Of course, this is some one hundred and thirty years in the future, too, so things have changed. And half of the buildings are either gone or half their size, so there’s that.

Why didn’t the world economy collapse?
The trade centers and stock exchanges are all backed up on Mars, of course! I mean, honestly. Everything in America is backed up on a Mars system. They think it’s safer than having it backed up on earth – just like Russia backs all her information up on the moon and the rest of the world has to make do with remote control satellites.
Of course, a large part of the economy did die. Companies – lots of head offices – were destroyed. But you think the kids care?

If new kids can cut through the Razorwire Fence - which I assume they can - do they have to join a Tribe?
Many of them will be loners for the first few weeks but they’re bound to be snapped up by one of the tribes. If a group of people were to cut the fence at the same place and band together before the tribes got to them, they’d stand a chance, but it’s not likely. I might actually put up rules for lone agents and the creation of new tribes.
I mean, lots of people want to be leaders so they're bound to find a reason for their characters to take some people with them. I'm sworn to stop this happening.

What happened to all the guns?
Yeah, that bothered me too – a lot of things were recovered from inside people’s houses, in hidden storerooms or other such stockpiles. A lot of these things would have been clothing, non-perishable foods, lighters, petrol, matches, blankets, knives – and guns. However, most firearms by this time need document after document to be registered legally – even in America. That means that there aren’t quite so many guns as you would think.
Also, the Government isn’t quite as stupid as it looks. It cleaned out anything they thought might be stolen and used against them and destroyed it. This means chemicals, weapons, machinery, and lots of files stored only in hardcopy.
There are ways around this. Paintball guns, antique weapons, weapons brought in from outside, and firearms used for practice. Airguns and painball guns being the more common alternative to handguns or rifles, the odd rifle from the civil war or some such might be found in someone’s basement. Another problem, however, is ammunition. Although older firearms might have molds in which metal can be melted down to bullet size, other weapons will have to find alternatives to bullets.

Where do the Children find food?
Well, lots of food left over. ‘Course, can only eat sealed and non-perishable foods. Muesli bars, cereals, rice, pasta. But this is a future, so I can come up with things like dehydrated food. Lots of instant soup being consumed in New Pork, I figure. Some of the clans grow small vegetable gardens from seeds they find. Fish, birds, cats and dogs are coming back into the city now, and although it’ll be a long time before they’ll be a stable source of food, they’ll do in a pinch for now.

Where do I post my character profile?
God knows how many times I have seen this question arising. The character profiles are posted on the Character Profiles board, and moved up by an admin to the Accepted Character Essays as soon as they are accepted.

I’m lost.
Happens to the best of us. Read CSS v1: Advent Children and you’re all set to play ball – just write up a profile, post it and wait. That’s simple, really, but if you get lost there’s ways to help. You can talk to Mina or I, as we are the most helpful admins in the world. (Well, not really. We’re just obsessed.)
Seraphim – admin – PM with care. She’s weird and tends towards pyromania. Mina – admin – PM with care. She’s weird and liable to stab you.
(If you’d like to be added to this list of N00b-E Helpers, PM Seraphim or Mina. We promise not to set you on fire/stab you.)
